Nominations open for AAG Fellows and Distinguished Members

Nominations for AAG Fellowship and Distinguished Member awards are now open.

AAG's Fellowship award recognises high professional standing of members in any field of gerontology, while the Distinguished Member award recognises members who have given outstanding service to AAG over many years. Details on these two awards and a link to each nomination form are on our website.

Nominations close on Friday 6 October 2023.

Awards will be presented at the 56th AAG Conference dinner on 16 November, on the Gold Coast.

Dementia Action Week

Dementia Action Week is a major leadership, awareness and advocacy campaign led by Dementia Australia. This year, Dementia Action Week 2023 runs from 18 to 24 September, which includes World Alzheimer's Day today, Thursday 21 September.

With the theme this year of 'Act now for a dementia-friendly future', Dementia Australia is encouraging communities to think about and ask people living with dementia, their families and carers what they need to help them live well.

AAG is proud to have a strong collaborative relationship with Dementia Australia, including our partnership between the AAG Research Trust and the Dementia Australia Research Foundation. We also have a suite of webinar recordings and resources on our website (just search for 'dementia' in the resource hub).

Report from Global Ageing Conference

AAG represents Australia's gerontology community internationally. Last week, we told you that Dr Meg Polacsek had attended the 2023 NZAG Conference in Auckland on behalf of AAG (self-funded). On the opposite side of the world, AAG's Policy and Research Manager, Dr Amber Mills, represented AAG at the 2023 Global Ageing Conference in Glasgow (she also self-funded her attendance!).

The Global Ageing Conference is a biannual event organised by the Global Ageing Network, an international network of ageing service providers. This year's conference was a global symposium for sustainable care and support and was co-hosted by Scottish Care and the National Care Forum, UK. The event brought together keynote speakers from around the world, a range of fascinating presentations and posters, and opportunities to network.

A pre-conference summit on workforce issues bought together international perspectives on the growing demand for care workers, challenges in recruiting and retaining those staff and best practice examples of interventions and ways to change the narrative. Amber presented two research posters at the conference Innovation Hub: one on the importance of management skills in delivering quality aged care, and another on the policy gap in navigation and support services required by some older people in accessing the Australian aged care system.
